Devilbis ProLite gun modification
I am using a regulator right at the gun, so I can correct for pressure loss in the 10mm ID supply hose. There is 10m of distance along this to the next regulator which is set to 60psi. The gun regulator is set to 26psi. But what is the nozzle pressure? Devices for measuring this are expensive. There could be pressure loss from the gun regulator to the nozzle, due to restrictions to the airflow, impeding the atomization of the paint. One very obvious restriction is the "cheater valve" an unmetered pressure regulator built right into the gun. Even if wide open it still creates a substantial restriction which could be the cause of significant pressure drop. So I removed this valve completely, and purchased the fittings so that the port on the gun could be sealed.
When next using the gun, I will fiddle with the fan, flow and pressure controls to get as fine an atomization as possible during the fog coating phase. I believe the graininess of the fog coat "seeds" the final orange peel effect, and is not completely overcome by the wet coat. The finer the fog coat grain the less of a wet coat may be need, and a point may be reached where the wet coat completely "dissolves" the grain of the fog coat.
