Problem Solving and Finally Getting To Trailing Edge
Hours were spent problem solving today with the upper rudder rib. I thought it would be a pretty straightforward installation using my squeezer and puller. The 2 opposing aft rivets gave me pause because there didn't appear to be enough room to set the opposing rivet once the first one was set in place. Careful messurements with my new digital caliper on some test rivets seemed to confirm my worries. I searched the VAF Forum for threads about it but could find none. Vans tech support opined that after installing the first one the opposing rivet could be carefully squeezed into place by slightly squeezing, thus shortening it, push it in a little, squeeze a little more, push it in further, etc until in was fully seated, then a final squeeze to set it. I tried a few test rivets with that technique it it seemed to work. I went for it on the rib and everything went smooth. The remaining aft 4 rivets are also supposed to be pulled flush rivets but it looked like I had the room to offset back rivet them. I slowly and carefully did the first 2, bumping my gun pressure up to 60 psi so it hit harder, and they went in smooth. I much prefer the appearance of solid rivets and Vans said no problem doing that. When the trailing edge is complete I'll do the other 2. Lastly, I finally starting on the trailing edge and now have the edge bonded with the double sided tape sitting on a straight piece of aluminum angle with another piece on above all weighted with several SCUBA dive weights that I had. Hopefully I'll end up with a nice, straight trailing edge when its all riveted. I'll be out of the shop the next few days but when I get back I'll be ready to start riveting it.
