Scott's RV-14 Build

Cleanup Things And Electrical Stuff

I had the privilege 3 days ago to be present when my building buddy Dan flew the maiden flight on his gorgeous RV-14A. Aside from higher then normal CHTs and oil temperature the flight was uneventful. A second flight yesterday yielded improved temps. Very motivating for me when I think where he was a year ago. He's coming out Saturday to help me rivet the remaining fuselage skins in place. In the meantime I'm keeping busy getting other things done. I started by dealing with some chaffing concerns I had with a bundle of fuselage wires in a J-channel where they pass through a couple bulkheads. It's not super tight as they pass by the bulkhead flange but It's close enough that I felt additional protection was warranted. Initially I was just going to used a dollop of RTV on the wires as they passed through the flanges but didn't think it would protect adequately. It also would effectively glue the wires into place which I didn't want. I searched Aircraft Spruce for various anti chafe products like spiral wrap but nothing quite fit the bill. Another option was grinding away some of the offending flanges for more clearance. I rejected this approach too. Hunting through my stuff I eyed a roll of double sided tape with slippery plastic covering the adhesive on both sides. It was just the right width and thickness. I snipped off a couple 1" lengths, put them in place and used just a small amount of RTV to secure them. My goal was to protect the wiring without inhibiting my ability to adjust the lengths or replace as needed down the road. I'm happy with my approach. The next thing was attaching a mini Molex connector to my elevator trim servo. Awhile back I'd bought from SteinAir some needed tools and some extra male/female connectors, male/female pins and a length of multi strand 24 AWG wire to practice on. SteinAir also has a series of very helpful YouTube videos. I also went to HF and bought a lighted bench mounted magnifier. After reviewing the videos I practiced crimping some male and female pins, installed them in the mini Molex connectors and using the pin removal tool to remove them. After I was comfortable with the process I worked on the flight article and was pleased with the outcome.
