Corrosion Inspection And Fuel Lines Finished
I woke up this morning to a lengthy email from Vans tech support. Apparently there's a possible issue with QB wings and fuselage kits in all models built by Vans Philippine vendor between June 2020 and January 2021, of which my QB RV-14 is one. The problem is the application and composition of the interior primer used on all parts resulting in potentially insufficient corrosion protection. Apparently some builders have started seeing some surface corrosion. Vans asked that those in the affected calendar group do an inspection of their QB assemblies looking for specific defects in the primer and any corrosion detected. They were also asked to do a wipe check on the interior surfaces with a white paper towel to determine if any residue is grey/black or yellow/green in nature. They wanted detailed photos of any affected areas and provided a link to report specific findings and photos. I think at the point they're compiling a database to see how extensive any issues are through the fleet. After inspecting my plane the primer seemed OK with no defects noted that they described. I did find one small spot in the fuselage that appeared to be light surface corrosion. My wipe test yielded a greenish residue but I'm unclear of the significance of that at this point. Van's made it clear that they will bear the costs of any remediation that's required and will get back to all affected builders once they have more info. At this point I have no idea what the significance of my findings are or what, if any, corrective action is needed. Hopefully not much. I'm glad this is AZ where corrosion is minimal to begin with.
That task completed I dove back into fuel lines fabrication. I made a lot of scrap last time but also learned some things and took notes. I tackled the right fuel line and was rewarded with my best one yet that I was pleased with. I went back and re-did the left one and it too came out better. So at this point all 4 fuel lines are completed. Next step is their final installation.
