WAAS GPS Antenna Installed

Got my WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) GPS antenna installed on top of the fuselage just aft of the canopy. Van's gives little guidance on this task. You're pretty much on your own. I went with a Garmin GA35 antenna, and my building buddy Craig provided the needed doubler that he CAD designed and had manufactured. He needed one for his RV-14 and made a second one for me. If you're smart on CAD (I'm not) you can design custom parts and there are companies that will precision manufacture your part quickly and inexpensively. Pretty cool. Installing the doubler meant drilling lots of holes in the fuselage top so it was measure 20 times, drill once. Once drilled, close quarter dimple dies were used to dimple the top skins. Riveting was a chore because I was bucking by feel. My shop heads are less than perfect, and I had to drill out a couple, but the end result was acceptable. Coupled with my Garmin GNX375 Navigator the antenna allows me to fly precision approaches in IFR conditions. I elected not to install an ILS because LNAV approaches are located at most airports these days. I frequently fly them at work and am comfortable with them.
