Vertical Stabilizer Complete
Back to work on the stab after a week off for work and a 5 day motorcycle ride with high school buddies. Riveted the rear spar to the stab. The flush rivets in the skins went smoothly. The AN470-4 rivets took longer then expected. I has to drill one out due to a gap between mating surfaces after setting it. Fortuately in was easily accessible and removing it was quick and uneventful. I also uneventfully set my first blind rivets. I bought a new rivet puller from ACE Hardware for $15. It was labeled Made in China but I wanted a better one then a Harbor Freight special. I reviewed Section 5 in the plans regarding Cherry Max rivets and set multiple practice rivets with it to make sure it worked correctly. I also reviewed an EAA video on blind rivets. The vertical stab is now complete except for 2 remaining flush rivets at the very front of the VS-706 rib. It's too narrow for a normal squeezer yoke, back riveting on the curved outside radius seemed iffy, and bucking them wasn't going to be easy either. I wimped out and ordered a 2.5 inch thin-nosed squeezer yoke for $145 from Cleaveland. It wasn't cheap but I know it'll make those last 2 rivets easy and I'll find other uses for it in the future.
