Day 48
Filling In Rivet Heads
Not a long post today. We spent the day filling in rivet heads on the wings with polyester body filler.
We took down the canopy we had hanging in the paint booth and even had a chance to look at it outside in the sunlight. Absolutely gorgeous. We then brought the wings in and started the long process of filling each rivet in with filler. This is done to give the rivets a smooth look as well as reduce drag. We were able to get one whole wing completed, and half of the other one. It shouldn't take too much more to finish the last wing and then we will work on sanding them all smooth once the filler is good and dry.
We also have the flaps and ailerons to finish. They have all been filled for a while, we just haven't gotten around to sanding them yet. Then all that will be left is filling and sanding the ones on the fuselage! That one has a ton as well. Including a couple thousand on the bottom. It is a long and tedious process, but totally worth it in the end. Makes a huge difference in the overall look as well as its aerodynamics.
To help with the spreading of the body filler we made little spatulas out of scrap aluminum and drilled holes in them. Then using razor blades as spreaders to fill in the rivets. Works great and helps to speed and ease the process significantly.
