MAIN fuel tanks - Part 2

After completing the access covers for the main fuel tank I tacked them in place with a few screws and turned the wings over to access the tank bay from the top.

I then located the tank following the instructions in the builders manual and for my application I decided to place the strap tensioners on the aft side of the tank so I positioned the tank accordingly. Once the tank was situated to my liking, I used some masking tape to "secure" it in place.

Before dropping the tank into the cavity, I had placed some plastic scrappers on the stiffeners installed to the inner surface of the lower cover to raise the tank high enough to make a good mark on the upper skin where the filler neck is located.

A friend of mine had made a centering tool for these tanks and I used some hardener from filler putty on the very point as a means of transfering the mark (hey, it was handy!). With the tool in place in the filler neck, I carefully lowered the upper wing skin and applied a little pressure over the tool to ensure the mark was transferred onto the upper skin.

The next steps will be to removed the tank and access cover and drill the filler neck hole.
