Quick Build Fuselage
I spent today updating the Kit Assembly Instructions with the Wing and Forward Fuselage sections to go with the Empennage section already there. Its a pretty thick book now. Then I got on Van's web site to make sure I had all the latest service bulletins, notifications and revisions to the plans. Van's publishes guidance for Wing and Fuselage QB kits on what's required in the plans to pick up as the builder where Van's left off. I found the guidance a little vague and not completely accurate. Van's recommends that builders go through every step in the plans to both familiarize yourself with the parts and structures and to insure that all the work is done correctly. This proved tedious but is probably a very good idea. I began at Section 25, Mid Fuselage Bulkheads and went through step by step, referencing my QB fuselage and checking off what's been done so far. The quality of the workmanship seems excellent. I paid particular attention to items specific to tri-gear vs tailwheel models. I have more to go but when done I know I'll have a better idea of where to pick up assembly and how structures are oriented. I also received an inexpensive label maker I'd ordered off Amazon. I'd been looking for a neat, professional way to label wiring. The HomebuiltHELP YouTube channel had a nice tip about using a label maker for that purpose. It was pretty cheap and my test labels look good. Finally I reserved my N-number with the FAA. I wanted it to represent something meaningful to me and be easy to say on the radio. I tried multiple 2 number, 2 letter combos but everything I wanted was taken. So I went with N892SL. 89 for the year I married, 2 kids plus Scott and wife Lisa.
