Fuselage Sections Joined
I finally got my forward and aft fuselage sections clecoed together which proved very satisfying. My initial plan was to put the sections on my 2 workbenches for mating. For that I'd need a buddy to help move the forward fuselage which it too heavy for my wife to handle. After thinking it through I decided on a different approach using my sawhorses and fuselage dolly. This would keep the assembly much lower for easier access and keep my workbenches clear. First I removed the previously installed bulkheads after a successful fit check. I only had to make some minor flange adjustments to them. Then I needed to reconfigure my workbenches to make space for what would become a 15' long component. I modified 2 sawhorses, shortening them to match height with the forward fuselage dolly. My bride helped me move the light but large aft fuselage a couple times as this was all taking place. After reviewing the plans multiple times on the various steps needed I got the 2 sections in place and adjusted for the initial mating. The plans state its best done with 2 people. My goal was to attempt to do it alone but fully expected to be thwarted because of the size and bulk of the 2 sections, tight tolerances and getting everything aligned correctly. And I didn't want to damage anything. To my pleasant surprise all it came together fairly easily and with no drama. Per plans after getting several initial clecos secured on the bottom flange I slowly and carefully shimmed the tail up inch by inch, levering the remaining side flanges into alignment while frequently inspecting my progress. I added clecos as things came into alignment working from the bottom up. It's a testament to the kit quality that everything on the aft fuselage I built aligned perfectly with the QB forward fuselage.
