Attaching Elevators
I finished up the horizontal stab skin rivets then moved on to attaching the elevators to the stab. The process was thwarted by several issues that cropped up. First off was my need for a big 3/8" AN6 bolt to run through the nutplates to clean the threads in prep for the rod end installation. I needed something I could drive in with a socket. The rod ends are difficult to turn and the bearings on them are vulnerable to damage. Usually when I have a tough task there's a tool for that. Sure enough Avery makes a rod end adjusting tool specifically for that application. Then I found my crows foot to torque the jam nuts wouldn't fit right because they're for flare nuts. I needed a simple box type crows foot. A trip to HF solved that. Once I got the rod end adjusted to the 13/16" dimension it was time to temporarily install them. I found rubbing issues on the rolled leading edge against the aft spar of the stabilizer. I spent some time hand massaging the sheet metal in an effort to slightly flatten the profile of the leading edge. I made some progress but not enough. The easiest fix is to back off the rod ends slightly to create more space. I've got an email in to Van's tech support to see if that's acceptable and if so how much is allowed.
