Tail Clean Up Tasks
Today it was time to change out the 4 elevator rod end bearings. I'd bought 4 new longer ones as the shorter stock ones didn't quite extend through the nutplates as I'd liked. I borescoped them months ago and each had one thread showing. But due to the taper in the end threads I wasn't comfortable that the last couple threads were fully engaged in the nutplate and thus at full strength. So for peace of mind as I did on the rudder, I bought the next size up rod ends and got them installed with the help of my previously purchased rod end tool. That made life easier and prevented damage to the rod end. Weighing both the old shorter ones and the new longer ones yielded a total weight increase of only 48.7 grams (1.72 ounces) total which I was pleased with. Since I had the elevators off the plane it also allowed me to fine tune sanding the filler on the underside of the fairings and add some glazing putty as needed. These were awkward to sand in the upside-down position when mounted on the plane. I got the elevator trim servo and pushrod permanently mounted and safetied. Then it was on to exchanging the temporary hardware store nuts I had on the horizontal stabilizer for AN hardware and getting the stab permanently torqued and safetied. Unless something unforeseen happens there's no reason to remove the tail surfaces anymore. I used my label maker to re-label the harness to the trim servo and replace the masking tape labels I'd originally installed. The right elevator went on without issues but the left needed on and off 3 times to get the replaced rod ends tweaked correctly. Then it'll be on to the vertical stab and rudder.
