Aileron Torque Tubes Complete
Got the left and right aileron torque tube assemblies completed. I primed the interior of all the steel parts 3 days ago then finished up the riveting and fabrication today. Progress was slowed by the precision tolerances needed orientating all the parts prior to match drilling. It was a "measure 20 times, drill once" situation. For example, the overall length tolerance was 17 3/4" to 17 25/32". A 1/32" difference. The brackets are offset on the torque tube by 1 1/64" using a small wood block. Figuring out how to precisely measure everything, clamp it down and drill it was a challenge. I got it done and was pleased with the end result.

Torque tube parts after priming and riveting on the rod ends.

I sanded a wood block to a 1 1/64" width.

Using a metal rule and L-squares I got the length set in the center of the needed tolerance. About 49/64". Tough to see it. I have to use a magnifying glass and flashlight to see the graduations on the ruler.

I measured and clamped everything to a flat piece of MDF.

Finished left and right torque tubes.
