Research on Priming
Like many builders I'm conflicted over the whole priming thing. Prime or not to prime? Is it worth it to add all the time, weight and money to the build process? What about resale value? After reading extensively the many opinions on VAF forums, the Vans Builders Manual, and talking to guys building planes locally I'm leaning to not priming except where its directed by Vans. Given the thousands of GA aircraft built decades ago that weren't primed and are corrosion free today, the arid AZ environment, wanting to keep the empty weight low, keeping my plane hangered, and honestly not caring if my plane lasts 100 years I think, at least for now, that priming the whole interior is overkill. And I can always do a Corrosion X treatment after the build is complete. Andif I was buying a flying RV I'd be way more concerned about build quality and workmanship then if it was primed or not. I did buy 2 rattle cans of SEM grey self etching primer to have handy and use as needed. I may get a small can of primer to paint on should I get any scratches that in Alclad parts that need sanding out.
