Day 83
Long-Range Fuel Line
Worked on getting the long-range tank fuel line fixed for the right wing that we couldn't get the fitting to slid back up because started to bend it without it fitted. We were able to find someone how who had the necessary tool to do the job. They showed us how to use them and check the fittings for proper seal. He lent them to us, so we were able to bring them back to use.
First, we cut approximately 3in of at the end we bent. Then did a test flange on the end that we cut off and tested it's seal with the fittings. They were satisfactory. We slid the fittings back onto the fuel line and created the flange for our fuel line end. Turned out perfectly.
We are going to double check with technical first, to make sure it will be ok if the fuel line is 3 inches shorter before we bend the line to fit along the wing spar. We'd hate to put all that work in, or worse have the tank installed and find out later that it cannot be any shorter than supplied.
Did some research on the fuel tank sealant. The product we are using is indeed the best. (3M AC-350 B Type II Aerospace Sealant) Found 3M's Data sheet and also found that there are different speeds. There is a quicker drying one that is actually much less expensive than the price of the other speed we used to do the tanks. It is far to quick to use for building the tanks, (Half hour work time) however it will be perfect for taking care of the few small leaks we have in our other tank, without breaking the bank. It should arrive the first of next week. In that time we should have the fuel line figured out, as well as may have some of out supplies. (i.e. Our rivets to finish mounting both tanks.)
Was also able to precure some supplies to make prepping the parts a bit easier as well. Got a dual action sander backing pad that will help tremendously. One of the composite wing tips had some dirt in the prime coat that will now be easier to sand out. As well as being able to prep the fuel tank for the sealant. Its usefulness will be boundless. (Sorry just very excited to have gotten one.)
Have both wings up on the work tables now. Their completion is drawing nigh.
