Day 107
Front Landing Gear
Today we got the nose gear mounted. It required greasing a bunch of bearings and bushings. It was a little tricky getting the bearings. (3 in total, accompanied with 6 washers) They fit very snuggly on the nose gear shaft. The bottom one we were able to use the spring to tap them on. The next set we used a paint stick to slowly tap it down , without bending or marring the bearings. The last one had the least distance to go and we were able to get it to snap on using our fingers. (This one goes on after it gets set up in the motor mount, so we were able to squeeze it on.)
After all the bearings and bushings are set in place, there are backing plates that hold the bushings in place on the motor mount. There are four bolts that are passed through and carefully tightened so as to cause no bending, or binding.
Lastly there is a mounting bracket that gets riveted onto the front of the motor mount.
Today we also got our first wheel spat fitted. (Left side) We sort of did it in an opposite order to how the manual suggests mounting it. There are no holes or marks, so everything has to be pre-measured and custom fitted and drilled. These also have to line up with the brackets already mounted to the wheel hub assemblies.
We were very happy with how our first one turned out though. It was a lot of on and off again to get it to fit just right, but it looks really good.
We got the other side set on the wheel hub assembly, so tomorrow we’ll get the rest of it drilled and fitted.
