Day 255

Luggage Compartment Upholstery

Today we have been working on the upholstery for the luggage compartment. This has proved to be quite the undertaking. There is very little room while working on this project, and each piece of carpet gets custom trimmed. Then you have to be able to glue them in one at a time without getting glue on any of the pieces that have already been installed. It is coming together though. Today we were able to get the extension compartment, the back and the floor completed. Now we are working on the sides. We have about a quarter of the pieces trimmed. Once they are all trimmed we will then go in and glue them in place.

As we were preparing the compartment for the upholstery we realized that we were going to need to remove the GPS antenna. It worked out well though because we noticed that the plastic backing plate we had made had cray and broke at all the screw locations. So we used it as a template and made one out of a scrap piece of 16th inch aluminum. We then glued it in place and used Cleco’s to align it and hold it until the glue cured. Now we will carpet over it and then be able to bolt the antenna back in place. They will have a very strong backing plate that will keep the very thing sheeting on the outside from fatiguing over time. As well, it will look really good because the carpet will go over top of it and you won’t even see the plate, just the cable connections and bolt heads. It’ll be a very clean look.
