Engine Cowling - Pt 26

I continued fitting the oil access door by cutting the hinge to length and fitting the door to the hinge and opening.

I had wanted to keep the hinge hidden but to accomplish that, I would have needed to have a small 0.050" gap along the forward edge and the door would only open 90 degrees. Instead I decided to place the hinge above the cowling surface and notched the door to fit around the hinge.

After fitting the door, I began installing the latch by first locating the latch onto the door, then cutting out the holes for the latch buttons. As I worked with the latch, I realized I would need a shim between the door and the latch to permit the buttons to sit flush so I fabricated a 0.040" shim that work perfectly.

The last bit will be to make a latch stop and I have a piece of phenolic that I will use for that. Then all parts will get cleaned, treated, refinished, and installed.
