Priming Parts and Riveting to Rudder Spar
Finally made some real structural progress on the rudder. Spent hours again prepping, deburring, scuffing, cleaning and priming parts. Then finally started riveting things to the rudder spar. The unusually long AN470-8 and -9 rivets used were challenging to drive straight and correctly. I needed to replace one but was able to drill it out uneventfully.
Also sent an email to Van's tech support with some photos of the lead rudder counterweight. I was supposed to countersink it to accept the dimples in the underlying support rib for the AN509-10 attach screws. The problem is I used a #12 screw countersink instead of the required #10 screw countersink. Using the required #12 drill for the screw holes threw me. I should have realized the AN509-10 screw is a #10 size screw, not #12. So the resulting recesses are larger then needed. Trying to figure out if its acceptable or should I get another lead weight and try again. Sigh. I hate making errors like that. Part of the learning process.
