Rudder Finished.... Finally

After many more hours then anticipated I finished rolling and riveting the rudder leading edge. The rudder is essentially complete and I'm happy to move on to the horizontal stabilizer. For me the leading edge was a long, difficult and at times frustrating task. Overall I'm satisfied with how the rudder came out. Most importantly I'm confident its airworthy and safe. I'm less then satisfied with a couple things. In spite of my best efforts, the trailing edge, while well within specification, isn't arrow straight. And the rolled leading edge curvature does not conform well to the templates. I spent many hours trying to make the curves conform but the middle and lower sections are off profile. This may come back to haunt me down the road when the rudder is attached to the vertical stab and possibly rubs against the stab spar. I reviewed Section 11 concerning Rudder Installation and there's no info there other then the rudder must pivot freely. In reading the VAF Forum about rudder issues I know many builders struggle with the leading and trailing edges so I'm not alone there. I've read nothing about rudder binding or rubbing issues once installed so I'm hoping it won't be a problem for me either. We'll see. Lastly I'm missing a flush rivet on each side down by the rudder horn. The small bucking bar I purchased specifically for that tight area was slightly too big. I'll hold off installing them for now. Might just use a pulled rivet there since it's low and difficult to see. In spite of the many hours spent, problem solving and sometimes less that perfect results I learned a lot on the rudder that will undoubtedly transfer to the rest of the plane. I'm mindful of the adage, "You don't get the airplane you want. You get the airplane you build."
