Brake Coupling Install
Today I worked on the two brake coupling flanges that are installed in the firewall. These are unique to the taildragger due to brake/main landing gear location. Yesterday I plotted and drilled the two 13/16" holes using a step drill. It was slow going as stainless is tough stuff. You need to keep the drill speed low, prevent heat buildup and use plenty of lubricant. Today I had to match drill six #40 holes in each flange through the firewall. I used up three #40 bits to drill 12 holes. After deburring I got the couplings clecoed in place with sealant. Vans recommended tank sealant but I used a high temp/oil resistant RTV gasket compound instead. I could go no further as riveting them is a two person job. So I need to get my builder buddy out here or get my bride trained on running the gun. She's certainly willing and I'm sure with a little instruction and practice she'd do a great job. Once the couplings are riveted in I can get back to installing the rudder pedal assemblies.
